Laboratory experiments and dual‐domain modeling of infiltration dynamics in partially saturated fractured porous media

چکیده

Many studies have shown that fracture networks can provide rapid pathways for water infiltration and time-dependent recharge in the vadose zone of consolidated fractured rock formations. To investigate control fracture–matrix interaction on preferential flow dynamics, we constructed a simple network system consisting m × 2 sandstone blocks placed between two glass plates. Water was injected from point source directly into with constant rate 1.5 g min−1. We used dual-porosity non-equilibrium model to discharge dynamics internal mass exchange observed strong deviations laboratory results when original parameterization used. This specifically concerns matrix–fracture volume ratio κ velocity v require modifications terms their definition underlying process description. Although assumes perfectly coupled matrix domain, experiments discrete nature led much stronger dominance domain hence reduction κ. The newly introduced parameter κ* includes additional effects processes related evolution smaller size interface. Furthermore, varying total vertical reveal convergence toward unique set existence representative elementary (REV) chosen setup. Though it performs less well very small systems below REV scale, describes sufficiently large high accuracy.

Waves in Partially Saturated Porous Media

E orts to extend the theory of poroelasticity to semilinear and nonlinear elastic response, to partially saturated pores, to inhomogeneous solid frame materials, and to viscous losses due to localized ow e ects are summarized. The prospects for a comprehensive theory of wave propagation in partially saturated porous media and the reasons for needing such a theory are also discussed. The main re...

modeling of hydraulic fracture problem in partially saturated porous media using cohesive zone model

in this paper, a finite element model is developed for the fully hydro-mechanical analysis of hydraulic fracturing in partially saturated porous media. the model is derived from the framework of generalized biot theory. the fracture propagation is governed by a cohesive fracture model. the flow within the fracture zone is modeled by the lubrication equation. the displacement of solid phase, and...

Preferential Flow Phenomena in Partially-Saturated Porous Media

Preferential flow in unsaturated porous media, in the form of fingers and channels, has been observed to take place in different types of media and at different scales. The preferential flow is caused by fluid instabilities, created by density or viscosity differences, or because of heterogeneities in the geological media. In this study, two very different types of preferential flow problems ar...

Quantifying colloid retention in partially saturated porous media

[1] The transport of colloid-contaminant complexes and colloid-sized pathogens through soil to groundwater is of concern. Visualization and quantification of pore-scale colloid behavior will enable better description and simulation of retention mechanisms at individual surfaces, in contrast to breakthrough curves which only provide an integrated signal. We tested two procedures for quantifying ...
